Q: The website is too slow. It takes 15 minutes to book one person for training. How do we fix this?
This is a futuristic goal of the IEC - any development will be communicated at the appropriate time
BSO training is specific to local Plant needs and was not developed by the IEC. BSO Plus was developed using a team of Subject Matter Experts (SME) that consisted of representation from plants, building trades and contractors. Outside expertise was received from Asbestos experts that designed the subject matter for the Asbestos Awareness module contained within BSO Plus. It is the policy of the Safety Training Standards Committee to gather input from subject matter experts via the SME teams
Auditing will include audits of the components of the BSO process, including the Six Month Safety Refresher. There will be spot audits done by the client owners. The audit process only looks at the gaps of who has completed the challenge tests and who has not. As far as feedback on the 8-hour BSO Plus, there are hand-outs at the end of each training class that invite feedback. The majority of feedback to date has been very positive.
As of September 1st 2010 the BSO SME Team has renamed the 'Challenge Test' to a 'Safety
Refresher'. This name change reflects the intent of this activity which is to keep the information "fresh" throughout the year. Now that the BSO Plus is valid for three years, the SME team wanted to ensure that the safety message was getting out to all workers on a consistent basis
They are not required but some of the plants are putting new hires through the program. The plants have extended in-house training for their employees that covers more than the 8-hour BSO Plus
If BSO Plus is a requirement to get on-site to the plant(s), then completion of the Six Month Safety Refreshers are also required
Nearly 6000 have been trained to-date in BSO Plus. With recent changes, the IEC is able to accommodate 1-day service
with up to 4 classes per day. Instructors are available to do “after hours” training as well
Yes, the BSO SME Team has considered this and has decided at this time to have everyone take the same 8-hour course (unless exempted by a specific Plant)
Out-of-town workers should be handled the same as in-town workers. The process is set up to be the same for everyone
The BSO Plus was designed by a Subject Matter Expert team with input from Plants, Building Trades and Contactors to meet plant safety standards - not in response to the MOL
If required to take BSO Plus, then the Safety Topics and Safety Refresher are required as well
Should be the same as other programs in the past; ie Asbestos Awareness and H2S etc
There are equivalencies for the Fall Protection Standards with the IEC and CSAO delivered training. In the near future Confined Space Entry and Safety Watch training will be standardized as well.
The monthly safety topics were designed to be delivered in approximately 10 minutes at regular safety meetings
This comment is duly noted. The overall intent by going to a 3-year BSO Plus was to eliminate the duplication in local site-specific training thus saving time spent in travel and training without compromising safety
Basic Safety Orientation Plus - Questions Previously Answered
The only requirement is to complete the latest Safety Refresher and to submit the record into the IEC database
Yes, the Asbestos Awareness course from the IEC has been rolled into the new BSO Plus along with H2S. Note: you are still not trained to work with Asbestos with this training

Try to get the information ahead of time and see how you will logistically need to resource it – you do not need a Health & Safety rep. but rather someone to administer the test & answers. Six Month Safety Refreshers have taken an average of 20 minutes to complete
Good planning. Many companies have been creative in solving these issues. We would be happy to share these ideas with you.
No – because there should be no travel time associated. Also, these topics and challenge tests can be done at regularly scheduled safety meetings
Fall Protection - Questions Previously Answered
Accreditation of trainers is currently underway and the process is being finalized. Once this process is complete it will be posted on the IEC website
The IEC and CSAO are recognized until July 31, 2011 until which date, all training will be on the new Fall Protection Standard.

Certain Trades are using this feature already
The IEC can assign workers to “no company specified”, however it does not delete past training history. The IEC cannot change training record history, therefore if your company has paid for the training, you will see this training in your history
You can use the Excel export to sort the records by topic first, then by date
The IEC has developed a new piece to the database that will allow the unions to see these records. The IEC has offered to work with the unions individually to set this up per union
SMA paid for, access to database, access to newsletters
It is the responsibility of the contractor to keep a copy of the completed tests, not the IEC
At this point, those companies that do not have access to the database can fax or email attendance sheets to the IEC for record entry – all others are to submit their own records via the database.
We are currently looking into a process where non-members can do this record upload.
We are adding this log-in feature for non-member companies to be able to
upload records. We will let you know as soon as this takes effect.
We have upgraded the database to be able to import a spreadsheet of records directly to the database. Please see "Upload Instructions" on our website
Q: The website is too slow. It takes 15 minutes to book one person for training. How do we fix this?
You would have to contact your Internet Service
provider if the website is too slow. If you are asking why the process of
booking a person for training is slow, we are working on having the status
of classes show up prior to booking. NOTE: As of August 5, 2010 the "Register" module under "Courses" tab indicates whether a class is FULL or not.
As of September 2010, the password requirement to access these Six Month Safety Refreshers has been dropped.

If this is not enough, the Safety Partnership and the IEC will respond accordingly to the challenge of getting workers to site, fully trained in a timely manner
The solution will be found by engaging the contractors, the building trades and the owner clients to find solutions

The contractors will deliver the information sometime during the month with records of the attendees put in the system at the IEC.

The Six Month Challenge Test has been renamed the Six Month Safety
Refresher as of September 1st 2010. The Six Month Safety Refreshers will be mandatory and can be found on the IEC website. These will be required in the months of March and September in 2010. In 2011 and beyond these will be required in March and September.
The test and answers will be on the IEC web and the answers were originally password protected so only certain individuals in the contracting companies and the building trades could access them. Since then, the STS Steering Committee has made the decision to eliminate the password protection of these questions and answers as of September 3, 2010.
The test needs to be remediated to 100% and this can be completed as a group if need be….helping is allowed.
A worker must have the most recent Six Month Safety Refresher completed to be able to work on any site
The Six Month Safety Refreshers don’t need to be submitted to the IEC in either case but need to be kept by the contractor. The contractor will be able to add these records to the Records Management Database

Site Specific FAQ
Next time the worker takes a course at the IEC, their badge will be updated
with current Training records. UPDATE: Some of the plants have offered to input their site-specific records to the database. If they are entered into the database and you get a card update, you will see these records on your IEC training card
Talks are on-going with all companies in the Valley. To date Suncor, Shell, Nova and Imperial Oil have made good progress reducing their site-specific training by elliminating the duplication of information already delivered in BSO Plus. This is an on-going process that will take time to reach the goal of 20-minute site specifics.

Six Month Challenge Tests (Now called Six Month Safety Refresher)- FAQ
You can obtain the questions and answers from our website
You can take the Safety Refresher at your work site, union hall, company location, IEC (for a fee), etc
To maintain safety in the workplace and to reduce the number of visits to the IEC for recertification, companies can administer a Six Month Safety Refresher and remediate to 100% the knowledge of safe work habits. This will also help keep the content fresh over the 3 year renewal period of BSO Plus
If you are working onsite at a client member location and have missed a Six Month Safety Refresher, the client could audit you to see if you are compliant with your Six Month Safety Refreshers. If you are not compliant, you may not be allowed onto the work site
Q: What if I miss a Six Month Safety Refresher because I have been working out of town for six months?

Questions will consist of content from the BSO Plus material covered in the course
