Asbestos Awareness

(Now part of BSO Plus)

This course was designed for the worker who will be working in areas where Asbestos is located. It is not designed for the workers who will be removing, working with, or handling asbestos.

Course Objectives:

Ø     What is asbestos?

Ø     Where do you find asbestos?      

Ø     Where are the hazards?

Ø     What are the control measures?

BSO Plus This interactive 8 hour safety awareness program is required to work on IEC member client sites. The session is split into two segments with the am portion addressing worker rights and responsibilities plus hazard identification. Specific hazards covered at an awareness level:
  • Asbestos and Refractory Ceramic Fibres (RCF)
  • H2S
  • Benzene, silica, lead, mercury, radiation, nitrogen
  • Thermal extremes
  • Slips/trips/falls
  • Driving hazards
  • Confined space 
The afternoon portion is devoted to elimination/control/mitigation of hazards. An interactive teambuilding exercise shows workers the importance of following instructions, what happens when you’re rushed, requesting assistance. Other afternoon topics:
  • PPE
  • Safe Work Permits including energy isolation and electrical lockout/tagout
  • Housekeeping
  • Signs/ barricades/ taping
  • Poor body positioning
  • WHMIS Review: Symbols, supplier/ workplace labels, MSDS (This short review does not qualify as WHMIS training)
  • Observation Based Safety (OBS) and TASC cards
Testing takes places throughout the day. All tests are remediated to 100% to ensure workers leave the program with correct information. BSO Plus is renewable every three years. The program is reinforced via monthly safety meetings that focus on one of the topics from BSO Plus.
NOTE: Part of the Mandatory requirement for BSO Plus is that contractors deliver a Safety Partnership Monthly Safety Topic to their workers as well as the Six Month Safety Refresher in March and September. Training records for both of these activities must be uploaded to the IEC Database.

Observation Based Safety This course was designed for the Member companies of the IEC. It is based on the American Model of BBS. It is an interactive session of videos, PowerPoint presentations and participant involvement. This course is the foundation for many of our Member and Contractor companies’ safety programs.

Course Objectives:

Ø To understand the important fundamentals of the OBS process

Ø To be able to define “safe” and “at risk” work behaviours

Ø To be able to conduct work observations

Ø To be able to give effective feedback to the people you’ve observed

Ø To use the data to improve performance

Confined Space Entry/ Confined Space Entry Safety Attenedant

NEW as of JULY 1, 2011: This course was designed for the Member companies of the IEC by a Subject Matter Expert Team that consisted of representation from Industry, Contractors and the Building Trades.

Confined Space Entry & CSE Safety Attendant Awareness Training provides general hazard awareness pertaining to confined spaces and associated safe work practices.  It is designed for workers who will be going into confined spaces and for workers who will be performing the duties of Safety Attendant for CSE. 

The program follows the Confined Space Regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The following topics are covered in the three hour program:

  • Definitions
  • Recognizing types of confined spaces
  • Confined Space Management Program
  • Worker Training
  • Hazards/Consequences/Controls
  • Atmospheric Levels
  • Confined Space Plan
  • Confined Space Permit

Course Objectives:

Through exercises, discussion, video, and group activities, the following learning objectives are achieved:

  • Define what is meant by the term ‘confined space’
  • Recognize various types of confined spaces
  • Identify primary hazards of a confined space
  • State the acceptable oxygen range for working in a confined space
  • Recognize the importance of gas-testing to assess atmospheric hazards
  • List the requirements of a CSE permit
  • Recognize the importance of a rescue plan
  • Value the importance of the Safety Attendant role

NOTE:  In addition to this training, before going into a confined space, workers will need in-depth, site-specific information on the hazards and safe work practices according to the relevant plan for that particular confined space

Electrical Awareness A team of electrical engineers developed this course for the Member companies of the IEC. This course consists of 4 modules as follows:

1) Electrical awareness for new workers

2) Arc Flash

3) Electrical PPE

4) Electrical general work practices

5) Site specific module for one owner/client to date

Course Objectives:

Ø     To meet the legislative requirements for electrical awareness training

Ø     To provide information as per CSA 462

Ø     To potentially design site specific modules for other owner/clients

Fall Arrest This course was designed by a Subject Matter Expert Team comprised of representation from the Building Trades, Contractors and Plant personnel. This course was designed for the worker who will be working at height. It outlines the Ontario Regulation 1445-00 and Section 26-1 through 26-9 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. This course requires the participant to bring their own Fall Protection Equipment to the course for the practical portion of the training. (Fall Protection harnesses will be provided otherwise)

Course Objectives:

Ø     1The participants will understand the 4 types of Fall Protection

Ø     2.  Tie-off and anchorage methods

Ø     3.  The proper inspection of fall protection equipment

Ø     4.  Proper donning

Ø     5.  The importance of a rescue plan

Fork Lift Truck Training Course This course was designed for the Member companies of the IEC. New legislation has shaped this course to provide both a theoretical knowledge of the care and operation of battery or gas powered forklifts. The Practical driving instruction portion has been expanded to include a session at the worksite where the worker will be trained on the tasks and on the machine specific to his work.

Course Objectives:

Ø     To produce competent workers for forklift tasks

Ø     To educate workers on the high potential for critical injuries and fatalities in this field

Ø     The legal requirements of the circle check

Gas Test Certification This course was designed for the Member companies of the IEC. It has a theoretical component as well as a practical component.

Ø     Review standards related to gas testing

Ø     Discuss definitions of “Hot Work” and “Confined Space”

Ø     Review of gas test equipment and how it operates

Ø     Discuss the requirements for calibration and bumping the equipment

Hazard Identification Training This course was designed for the Member companies of the IEC. Through a series of videos, PowerPoint presentation and practical group exercise, this course educates the worker in the basics of hazard identification in the workplace.

Hydrogen Sulphide Awareness Training

Course Objectives:

Ø     Describe potential sources of H2S

Ø     Describe characteristics of H2S

Ø     Understand when and where to use protective equipment (H2S monitors and SCBA)

Lockout/Tagout This course was designed for the Member companies of the IEC. It has a theoretical component as well as a practical component. In this course we will review the theoretical component and then the practical component will come later at the site.

The Course Objectives are: we must ensure the participants know the responsibilities of

Respirator Fit Testing and Training This course was designed for the Member companies of the IEC. It has a theoretical portion as well as a practical portion. It meets the standards as outlined in both the CSA Standards and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Our fit testing protocol is a Qualitative one using Portacount equipment and computerized record keeping.

Course Objectives:

Ø     The participants understands the different types of Respiratory protection

Ø     The donning and doffing of the respiratory equipment

Ø     The cleaning requirements

Ø     The proper storage of the respirators

Ø     The use of filters and cartridges

Root Cause Analysis This course was based on the Apollo Root Cause Analysis process by a team led by senior Nova Chemicals’ staff and IEC personnel.  This course was designed to meet the needs of Contractor management and supervisors who may be part of an incident investigation either on the owner/clients’ site or at their own workplace. The participant’s role is emphasized rather than the facilitative aspect of the Root Cause Analysis process.

Course Objectives:

Ø     Familiarize participants in the purpose of incident investigation

Ø     Learn about the Cause and Effect Principal

Ø     Outline the four steps to achieving Effective Solutions

Ø     To be confident in participating in an incident investigation using the Cause and Effect principal

Safety Attendant Training

New as of July 1, 2011:

This course was designed for the Member companies of the IEC by a Subject Matter Expert Team that consisted of representation from Industry, Contractors and the Building Trades.

The job of Safety Attendant for Mobile Equipment, Supplied Air, or Hot Work is a key function in keeping workers safe on the job.  This 1.5 hour program covers the following content:

  • Mobile Equipment Safety Attendant Requirements
  • Mobile Equipment Communications
  • Supplied Air Safety Attendant Requirements
  • Supplied Air Operations
  • Hot Work Safety Attendant Requirements

Special focus is placed on the challenges of a Safety Attendant role which include remaining focussed and alert.  The authority and responsibility to suspend work when a condition/ behaviour/action makes it unsafe for workers is emphasized.

Through question and answer, discussion, and scenarios, the following learning objectives are achieved:

  • Discuss/recognize/appreciate the requirements for a:
    • Mobile equipment attendant…including communications, PPE, training
    • Supplied air attendant…including pressure gauges and regulators
    • Hot work attendant…including pre-job duties and controls for spark containment

Safety, Health and the Law This course was designed for the Member companies of the IEC. The primary purpose is to outline current OHSA law and the roles and responsibilities of workplace parties within this framework.  Participants are tested on their ability to find information in the OHSA and Regulations. Information and the significance of Bill C-45 rounds out this program. We review the two C-45 cases that have been before the courts to date.

Course Objectives:

Ø     Proficiency in the OHSA and Regulations

Ø     Emphasizes due diligence and the Internal Responsibility System

Supplied Air/Respirator Fit Testing - SABA This course was designed for the Member companies of the IEC. Participants view a 25 minute video and answer questions based on the information from the video. Both Scott and Draeger systems can be used depending on the Contractor requirements. A qualitative fit-test using a Portacount machine determines proper mask size and user’s fit factor. The practical portion of this training has the worker hooking up to the air-supply where they are shown how to clear the mask using the purge valve as well as ability to don and doff the mask and the equipment. The instructor ensure the worker knows what actions to take in the event that the main air supply is interrupted.

Course Objectives:
  • Determine proper mask size and fit
  • Practical demonstration of donning and doffing the equipment
  • What to do in the event of air interruption
  • Testing of knowledge using a questionnaire

Self Contained/Respirator Fit Testing - SCBA This course was designed for the Member companies of the IEC. Participants view a 25 minute video and answer questions based on the information from the video. Both Scott and Draeger systems can be used depending on the Contractor requirements. A qualitative fit-test using a Portacount machine determines proper mask size and user’s ability to don and doff the mask. The practical portion of this training has the worker donning the backpack equipment where they are shown how to clear the air using the purge. The instructor makes sure the worker knows what actions to take in the even that the alarm system indicates low air supply in the backpack. Low air alarms are demonstrated.

Ø     Practical demonstration of donning and doffing the equipment

Ø     What to do in the event of alarm condition

Preventing Workplace Violence and Harassment

This course is designed for leadership: Owners, managers, supervisors, Joint Health and Safety Committee members, Building Trades' Leaders. It is based on the requirements of Bill 168- the June 15, 2010 amendment to the  Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Course Objectives:        

  • Recognize the hazards of workplace violence

  • Define workplace violence/harassment/domestic violence

  • Identify rights/roles/responsibilities of workplace parties

  • Recognize inappropriate and unacceptable behaviours including warning signs of violence

  • Realize the consequences of violence in the workplace
